Iconic lemon squeezer Juicy Salif by French Designer Philippe Starck
Juicy Salif is not only the most famous lemon squeezer in the world, but also one of the most famous design icons of the late 1980s. Philippe Starck designed it at the beginning of his career for the Italian kitchen appliance manufacturer Alessi and it immediately earned him worldwide recognition as a unique product designer. Even today it is still one of the most provocative and intelligent designs in the Alessi catalogue. It was probably never the most practical lemon squeezer, but that didn't stop its claim to fame in any way. It looks so unworldly that many of its admirers even use it only as a functional sculpture, which is why it quickly became a collector's item. You can find it in numerous design exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It is cast in aluminium and has three spindle-shaped legs with rubber pads underneath for stability.
How does it work?
Place the fruit on the rounded tip, press it gently downwards and making slow rotating movements at the same time. The juice will slowly trickle down to the tip, and into a glass or a bowl below.
