ALESSI | Lemon Squeezer | Juicy Salif
Icon lemon squeezer Juicy Salif by French Designer Philippe Starck
Juicy Salif is not only the most famous lemon squeezer in the world but also one of the best known design icons of the late 1980's. Philippe Starck designed it at the beginning of his career for Italian kitchenware company Alessi and it gained him instant worldwide recognition as a one-of-a-kind product designer. Even today it remains one of the most provocative and intelligent designs in the Alessi catalog. It probably never was the most practical lemon squeezer but that didn't stop its claim to fame at all. It looks so otherworldly that many of its admirers even use it only as functional sculpture and therefore quickly it became also a collector's item. You will find it in numerous design exhibitions, among them the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It is cast from aluminium and has three spindly legs with rubber paddings below for stability.
How you work it
Place the fruit on the rounded tip, press it gently downwards and making slow rotating movements at the same time. The juice will slowly trickle down to the tip, and into a glass or a bowl below.
