Iconic lemon squeezer Juicy Salif by French Designer Philippe Starck
Juicy Salif is not only the most famous lemon squeezer in the world but also one of the most famous design icons of the late 1980s. Philippe Starck created it at the beginning of his career for the Italian kitchen appliance manufacturer Alessi and immediately gained worldwide recognition as a unique product designer. Even today, it is one of the most provocative and intelligent pieces of design in the Alessi catalogue. It was probably never the most practical lemon squeezer, but that did not detract from its fame. Juicy Salif looks so unworldly that many of its admirers even use it only as a functional sculpture, which is why it quickly became a collector's item. It can be seen in numerous design exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
The citrus juicer is cast from aluminium and has three spindle-shaped legs with rubber pads on the bottom for stability.
How does it work?
Place the fruit on the rounded tip, press it down slightly and make some little twisting movements at the same time. The juice will slowly drip down from the tip into a glass or bowl.
